The following descriptions have been compiled to help provide you with a better understanding of the ingredients that we have chosen to use, what properties they hold and what role they play in our products.  After all, it is important to understand what we are using on our bodies.

All products in the Saw Palmete range are Paraben and SLS free.

SAW PALMETTO

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is a small plant indigenous to the south-east of the United States of America, from South Carolina to Florida. The extract is taken from the dried fruit. Saw Palmetto extract has anti-inflammatory flavonoids such as rutin, kaemferol and apigenin to support blood circulation in the scalp. Fatty acids within the extract may assist in reducing the damaging effects of androgens (the most damaging being dihydro-testosterone or DHT) on the hair follicle.

BIOTIN

Biotin

Biotin, or Vitamin B7, is a water-soluble vitamin naturally occurring in foods such as meat, nuts and eggs. Biotin acts as a coenzyme in many biological processes including the those associated with hair growth. It has long been used to help hair feel thicker.

CAFFEINE EXTRACT

Caffeine Extract

Caffeine is produced as a by-product of decaffeination process of coffee beans. It is a phosphodiesterase-inhibitor which serves to increase cAMP levels in cells and therefore promotes proliferation by stimulating cell metabolism. This counteracts the effect of androgen induced follicular miniaturization and may promote hair growth.

GINGER ROOT EXTRACT

Ginger Root Extract

Ginger is a medicinal plant that has been used for thousands of years to treat a range of ailments. The active component of ginger is 6-gingerol which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which creates a healthy environment for hair follicles. 6-gingerol also causes promotes blood flow to nourish hair follicles.

SEAWEED ALGAE EXTRACT

Seaweed Extract

Seaweed Extract or Algae, has a particularly high nutrient content, containing calcium, iodine, magnesium, iron, potassium, vitamin A, B1, B6, B2, C and niacin.  It provides powerful antioxidants and essential fatty acids required to help prevent damage to skin cells in the scalp by preventing damage to amino acids and protecting the cell membrane. Its potent rehydrating ability will nourish and replenish hair to stop it becoming brittle. Seaweed Extract will increase shine without causing hair to become greasy or limp.

CHAMOMILE EXTRACT

Chamomile Extract

Chamomile is a member of the daisy family and has been used for hundreds of years as a healing herb for a variety of ailments, particularly skin conditions and anxiety. The extract is packed with flavonoids such as apigenin which can penetrate deep into the skin and act as an anti-inflammatory, creating a healthy environment for hair roots.

ARGAN OIL

Argan Oil

The Argan tree is endemic to Morocco, North Africa. Argan oil is extracted from the kernels of the fruit and has the ability to form a hydrophobic barrier which serves to keep hair moisturised, strong and shiny.

ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary is a herb used for both food and healing. Native to the Mediterranean region, an essential oil can be extracted by distilling and concentrating the plant compounds. Mediterranean culture has used rosemary essential oil for centuries in hair rinses to promote hair growth. Rosemary essential  oil  has found by a number of studies to reverse hair-loss in patients experiencing androgenic alopecia. Compounds within rosemary leaf have been found to effective in reducing the ability of DHT to bind to androgen receptors, thus protecting the hair follicle.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL

Lavender Essential Oil

Taken from the fragrant lavender plant, lavender essential oil  is a popular remedy for insomnia and anxiety. It has also been become a popular means of controlling sebum and moisture balance in hair. Its antimicrobial properties make it a good candidate for maintaining a healthy scalp and hair root system.

VITAMIN E OIL

Vitamin E Oil

Vitamin E is a naturally occurring fat-soluble antioxidant found in foods such as nuts and seeds. It is important because it scavenges free radicals that would otherwise damage our cells. Patients with hair loss typically exhibit lower levels of antioxidants in their scalp and Vitamin E may help reduce the effects of oxidant damage on the hair follicles.
