UNDERSTANDING HAIR LOSS
Hair loss comes in many forms with many causes. While more severe cases of hair loss such as alopecia areata (autoimmune alopecia) must be treated under the guidance of a medical practitioner, more mild cases of hair loss such as those often accompanying aging and stress may be controlled with lifestyle modification and the use of products designed to support healthy hair.
Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is the most common cause of hairloss in men and women. In men AGA presents as the classic ‘receding hairline’ and general thinning while woman may experience a gradual widening of the midline part also with general thinning.
THE UNDERLYING CAUSE
is an androgen-dependent miniaturization of genetically predetermined hair follicles, mostly caused by a hormone known as dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Diet is also an important factor with iron, zinc and vitamin E playing essential roles in hair growth. Deficiencies in iron are the most common cause of diet related hair loss.
Environmental causes of hair loss can include exposure to heavy metals, smoking and unhealthy scalp layers which result in oxidative damage to the hair follicle cells. Even emotional stress can contribute to hair follicle shrinkage and consequent reduction in hair thickness and number.

HAIRLOSS PREVENTION

With AGA as the leading cause of hairloss there has been growing interest around how DHT interacts with the hair follicle to induce shrinkage, hair thinning and eventual loss. Oral medication such as finasteride were traditionally used treat DHT-dependent pathologies such as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) but men taking the medicine discovered hair regrowth. While effective, finasteride can have side effects.
Interest in natural compounds that inhibit the action of DHT on the hair follicle (‘DHT blockers’) has surged recently due to the hope of blocking the effects of DHT with minimal side effects. Extracts from the Saw Palmetto and Rosemary plants are examples of naturally occuring ‘DHT blockers’ and recent studies suggest they may show promise in safely treating AGA. However until better designed studies are undertaken to confirm these results, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cannot strictly classify them as effective treatments.
Free radical compounds have been shown to age the hair follicles and melanocytes (give hair colour) causing thinning and greying of the hair.
By removing dirt and excess sebum from around the hair follicle this oxidative burden may be reduced, supporting a normally functioning air follicle. This is why it is important to wash your hair regularly with shampoos that have good scalp penetration while not causing irritation.
Maintaining healthy microcirculation in the scalp is important as the hair follicles need nourishment in order to growth healthy hair. Anti-inflammatory compounds such as those found in ginger may help to support healthy blood flow to and from the hair follicle while reducing the damaging effects of inflammation.
In order to obtain a healthy ‘lustre’, ingredients such as biotin and argan oil are great to add shine and volume to hair by trapping moisture and adding structural integrity to the hair fibre. This creates the perceived effect of ‘volumizing’ the hair and serves to support it against breakage.
TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HAIR
While there is a large genetic component to hair loss, if you combine the use of our products with the following tips, you are on your way to keeping a healthy head of hair.
-
Don’t Stress! Studies have shown that emotional stress is one of the most common causes of diffuse hair loss, particularly among woman.
-
Eat well. Make sure you eat a colourful, varied diet with plenty of fresh fruit and veges. If you are vegan/vegetarian, make sure you are getting enough iron and take some vitamin C to increase iron absorption. If you love seafood, you will enjoy the added bonus of extra zinc.
-
See a doctor. Sometimes hair loss may be driven by an underlying disease or deficiency. Your doctor may order tests such as serum ferritin and thyroid function.
